AN AUTOMATIC CIRCUIT FOR DRIVING AN UMBRELLA DURING RAIN PERIOD

The goal of this thesis is to create a smart umbrella that, because of its usefulness and marketability, may minimize human labor. This is crucial in today’s society, which is vulnerable to wind and rain without adequate protection. The goal of this research is to create a marketable and domestic umbrella that is extremely sensitive to sun and rain incidents. Particularly in the summer, the sun’s heat makes it difficult to operate on the floor of open spaces. When it rains or is sunny, this canopy shades the entire hallway. Various sensors, such as temperature sensors, are used to control this umbrella.

The shaft can play a significant role in power transmission for the umbrella’s opening and closing because the motor can respond quickly and instantly to it. The required shaft rpm is supplied by the motor. Temperature sensor alerts the control box’s Arduino every time the ambient temperature rises above 35 degrees. The motor is then given a further signal by Arduino so that it can turn on and provide the necessary rpm to the coupling shaft. This project is an affordable way to provide automated controlled shade from rain and strong sunlight. Consequently, these types of automated umbrellas can be used to solve problems in open, large areas.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

At Chama Milling machine they imports   a lots of grain such as maize and others from different regions  for the production of flour  especially maize flour, they use sunlight to dry maize after wash before milling process, but during the rain season they face some challenges to cover all of the maize at that area using for drying when the rain fall due to the fact that the time to react is very small compared to the rate raining.

So an expected automatic circuit which will be designed for driving a slide roof during rain moment to cover all grain  will perform all activities .Therefore, they cannot hash to remove all the grain or to fight with rainfall at that area.

Main objective

The main objective is to prevent grain from wet due to the rainfall.
Specific objectives
To design an automatic circuit for driving a slide roof to cover the grain during raining period.
To identify the components needed for the system building

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

There is no need for person to cover the grain, since the system is automatic.
Time consuming and effort for grains covering will minimize since the system is automatic.
Damage of grain will reduced since the roof will protect it accurately.

LITERATURE REVIEWS

It operates wonderfully since it is an automatic umbrella. Hans Haupt created the pocket umbrella in 1928. Hans Haupt was a student at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts studying sculpture at the time she created a prototype for an enhanced compact foldable umbrella for which she was granted a patent in September 1929. The business that created the umbrella is from Austria. The firm Knirps produced the little folding umbrellas in Germany Student researchers from the US University of Central Florida worked on an automatic umbrella. They created an automated umbrella that utilized a control system to function. Even rain umbrellas were still seen as a product only for distinguished women, with men facing ridicule if they were seen with one. The umbrella canopies of the 1600s were woven out of silk, which provided limited water resistance compared to today’s rain umbrellas, but the distinctive canopy shape was unchanged from the earliest documented designs. In 1750, Hanway approached and took the umbrella from the man holding it.
With the exception of a few delicate regions, modern umbrellas are hand-assembled, which allows for the production of them by competent employees. The ribs and tails are joined to a shaft that is composed of wood, metal, or fiberglass in the first place. The nylon canopy is then manually sewn in pieces. They were big and unwelcome. Only today can you frequently see ribs and stretchers on patio umbrellas and parasols. Round metal ribs and holes are now easily accessible thanks to advancements in metal technology, but some manufacturers are producing umbrellas with these features.

DISADVANTAGE OF EXISTIG SYSTEM

Workers must be there for the covering of grain.
During rainfall grain gets wet
The grain takes more time to dry again after getting wet

THE PROPOSED SYSTEM

This system will enable the covering of grain during the rain period in order to prevent the grain from being wet.
Since the system is automatic, the workers will continue with other activities like milling and packaging the flour ready for selling while the system is performing the duty of covering the grain such as maize.

ADVANTAGE OF PROPOSED SYSTEM

Since the system is automatic there is no need of person to cover grain
The system will cover the grain automatically once there will be any indication of rain before it rains.
The grain like maize will dry at the right time.

MECHANICAL POWER CALCULATTIONS

To calculate the mass of canvas.
Mass of Canvas for dimensions of 15m x12m=45kg These calculations from standard weight and dimensions of Canvas
For 10m x11m =27.5kg of canvas,
For 8m x15m =30 kg of canvas, that values nearest to required dimensions.
Then taken as an area,
8m x15m=120 m2 =30kg
12m x15m =180 m2, then 120 m2 =30kg
180 m2=45kg

To calculate the mass of slide roof with canvas materials and single square bar.

Mass of square bars =Density of Aluminum x length x thickness x width x number of bars
=2700kg/m3 ×12m × 0.05m × 5× 10 -3× 2
=16.2kg
To calculate the mass of slide roof with canvas materials and single square bar.
Mass of slide roof =mass of canvas + mass of single square bar
= 45kg + 8.1kg =53.1kg

To calculate the friction force
Friction force = Force x coefficient of friction
= 520.38 x 0.5 = 260.19N
To calculate work done due to friction
Work done = Friction force x distance of contact
= 260.19 x 15m = 3902.85J
To calculate power needed to overcome friction force
Power = Work done due to gravity/time
= 3902.85/35
= 111.51W

CONCLUSION

The main objectives of this project was to develop the mechanism that would be able to cover the drying area for grains at Chama Milling Machine during raining by an automatic slide roof, where by 80% of the project has been achieved.

RECOMMENDATION

The system in this project should not only be use at Chama milling machines but also it should be using in different places where their daily activities dealing with drying of grain such as maize, rice ,and so on, as the system is fully automatic.
Also the system will use in other places where they need sun rays for drying different things like small fish from lake Tanganyika and lake Victoria, the place where more small fish available.
