SOLAR SYSTEM FOR IRRIGATION

Iyala  village is located at Mbeya Region and Mbarali District. Its population is approximately about 234,908 peoples. The main activities in Iyala is small scale farming ,they deals with the different crops like maize and tomatoes . The village has no mains supply from the grid, but it has got many rivers  .The farmers depend on seasonal rain fall to grow up their crops, there is no any means of irrigation system to this village.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Iyala farmers depend on farming mainly Maize and Tomatoes, the area has rivers and lakes but they are not use them for irrigation because there is no electrical power from the grid.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Project objective is sub divided into two main parts namely;

MAIN OBJECTIVE

To increase crops production by irrigation.

 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

Design the solar system

Identification of appropriate components

Assembling of the components

Build prototype

Test prototype

SIGNIFICANT OF PROJECT

It saves people life

Improve productivity

Reduce poverty

Increase earning for the people

METHODOLOGY

The following is a frame work the project is

managed and executed

Literature review and consultation

Data collection

Data analysis

Circuit design

Construction and test the prototype

Project report writing

LITERATURE REVIEW

General introduction

In literature review consists of existing system and its block diagram ,drawback of existing system ,proposed system and its block diagram ,definitions and explanations of different components/devices used in the irrigation system.

Existing system

Currently the farmers they depend on rainfall ,no means of irrigation than seasonal rainfall

Existing system block diagram

Drawback of existing system

Low production

Less production

Proposed system

A system contain the following equipment : Solar array which convert Sunlight into electricity ,system control array and pump ,an electric motor which drives the pump and a water pump which moves water from source to delivery point.

Proposed block diagram

ADVANTAGE OF PROPOSED SYSTEM

It will increase production rate of the farmer

It will save time

It will reduce human intervention

Increase quality

DATA COLLECTION

Data collection is the process of collecting necessary information which will be used for designing a proposed system after being analyzed. This information is obtained form a particular site of a study.

Area exposed to sunlight

Farm size

Table 1

DATA ANALYSIS

Selection of solar array

Power = 200w

Voltage=24v

Module short circuit current (Isc)=8.333A

Array short circuit current =Isc*module in parallel*safety factor

       =8.333*2*1.25

        =20.83A

Selection of battery

Battery capacity = power of load *backup hours/ battery voltage

    =746*4/24

     =124.33Ah

Selection of charger controller

      =Array short circuit current * 1.56

       =20.83 * 1.56

        =32.448A

Selection of Inverters

Size of inverters = total load * safety factor / power factor

   = 746w * 1.3/0.8

    =1212.25VA

Selection of pump motor

In selection of pump motor things consider is flow rate and total dynamic head.

CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR PUMP MOTOR

CONCLUSION

This project is succeed by achieving the main objective where the system designed its working properly for irrigation activities in the iyala village

RECOMMENDATION

This project can be expanded as much as possible in order to get power for irrigation so as to help people to generate their lives also this project can be modified by using different power system instead of solar system like using power generator.
